Shake – A – Can Fundraiser
Stop-And-Shop (formerly the Pathmark) Shopping Center, in Kinnelon
Twice each year KVAS holds a Shake-A-Can fundraiser for the homeless animals. These events take place on the Saturday just before Mother’s Day in May, and again on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Each runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sometimes we sell plants or small holiday gifts but we ALWAYS Shake-Cans to raise as much money as possible. Often we are joined by pets who have been adopted from KVAS but come back to help raise money for the animals who have yet to find their FOREVER home.
KVAS is always looking for people to help with these events and if you are willing give us a call at 973-283-4120 or email us at email@example.com. OR, just mark your calendar to stop by to say Hi!

K-FEST 2016 and Beyond
KVAS plans to be an active participant in this family-oriented, fun-filled festival which is held on Kinnelon Road and attracts a great many local vendors and businesses. Watch the electronic signs in front of the Kinnelon municipal building for more information.
Two very young but gifted, creative and caring girls from the local community decided to make and sell Tree Ornaments and donate all of the money raised to KVAS to help our homeless animals. They came up with the idea, made every ornament and set up a table in the local Petco store. What entrepreneurs!
Sophia and Ali, you are awesome!!
October 3-4, 2015
On Sunday, we held a small but moving ceremony during which our animals received the blessing of St. Francis from the rector of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kinnelon. The congregation of this church then blessed the shelter a second time with gifts of pet food and a monetary contribution.
KVAS was the happy recipient of lots of donated items from a local Girl Scout, who was working on her Gold Award project. The project called SPEAK Up for Animals, was held at the Kinnelon Library on June 13th from 2-4 pm. KVAS attended with some of our adoptable cats. Madeline Florio, a local resident, hosted this event and collected lots of food and goodies for our shelter animals. KVAS also benefited from the publicity and was mentioned in the local newspaper article.
The 5th Grade Girl scout troop at Stoneybrook School, in an effort to earn their bronze award for service, decided they would sponsor a school-wide donation drive. The classroom which donated the most got a pizza party. KVAS was pleased to accept boxes and boxes of donated our WISH LIST items including: pet food, bedding, toys, Veterinary Gift certificates and money. The effort sparked so much interest in the school that one of the kindergarteners, ON HIS OWN, collected over $300 at a family gathering.
With student such as these, KVAS knows that the future of animal care for homeless animals is in good hands!
May 25, 2015
The Borough of Kinnelon hosted the Tri-Boro Memorial Day parade in 2015 and KVAS was proud to march under its banner. Our volunteers were joined by BAILEY, a dog who had recently been adopted from KVAS and was so excited to see the crowds that he just wanted to lick the face of anyone looking for a KVAS-Kiss. And, as in years past, KVAS arranged to have a flag flown in the Field of Flags display on the village green to honor all military animals.
October 12, 2014
KVAS joined with many other Kinnelon-based organizations and friends at the best K-Fest to date! For the very first time the event was held on Kinnelon Road (which was closed to traffic for this special event). For those of you who don’t know, K-Fest is an old fashioned, town-wide gathering filled with fun, food, music, pony rides, petting zoos and games. As the Kinnelon shelter, we were happy to meet and greet our local fans, sell some animal-related gifts and of course, accept donations. And, since we were so very close to the shelter itself, we even gave some impromptu tours of the shelter.

Once again this year, representatives from the congregation of the parish of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kinnelon arranged for The Reverend David DeSmith to conduct a Blessing of the Animals. This is always a touching and lovely ceremony. The church members also make a donation to the shelter and so we are doubly blessed.
May 3, 2014 and November 22, 2014
The Kinnelon Volunteer Animal Shelter held its bi-annual fundraiser, Shake-A-Can fundraisers at the Kinnelon Pathmark on May 3, 2014 and again in late November. Both were a great success! We sold potted plants, pictures, and candy for Mother’s Day and pet-related holiday gift just ahead of Thanksgiving. Lots of friends, along with past and present pet adopters, stopped by with pictures and stories of their special animals. We are always overjoyed to hear these tails…err tales!
And thanks to our wonderful volunteers and local donors – we raised money to care for our cats and dogs in their “Haven ’til Home” at the Kinnelon Volunteer Animal Shelter.
October 27, 2013 from 4:00-6:00 PM
KVAS participated in the second annual Jack O’Lantern Jamboree. The event was sponsored by The Suburban Trends, in partnership with Push to Walk NJ and the Glenwild Garden Center. The event was a fund/awareness raiser for Push To Walk NJ, which is a non-profit that works with people with spinal-cord injuries.
Hundreds turned out in full costume to enjoy this family friendly-event, which was facilitated by members of the high school’s Future Business Leaders of America club. The event featured a hall of carved pumpkins, games, and Halloween costume contest.

May 27th, 2013: Tri-Boro Memorial Day Parade & Field of Freedom
On Memorial Day KVAS gratefully honored all those who have served our country and preserved our freedom. At the Kinnelon Borough Hall, immediately following the parade, a wreath ceremony was held. There was also a Field of Flags display to honor those veterans and active duty members who have lost their lives. Many KVAS volunteers personally recognized loved ones, and the shelter purchased a flag in honor of all the animals that have served our country over the years. A portion of each flag sale was equally distributed between America’s Vet Dogs and Reserve Aid.
April 20, 2013
Many, many attendees visited the KVAS table of volunteers at the Earth Day Fair hosted by Kinnelon Conserves. The event brings local businesses, not-for-profit organizations and Kinnelon residents together for a day of environmental action and awareness. The event was held at the Pearl R. Miller School in Kinnelon. There was plenty of educational material and fun for the whole family with face-painting, crafts, eco-friendly demonstrations and more. KVAS presented thought on such topics as earth- friendly kitty litter.
Sunday February 24th from 1-4pm at the Kiel Firehouse
A group of Pearl R. Miller School 7th graders ran a fundraiser for KVAS at the Kiel Firehouse and KVAS brought some of our stunning kitties to the event to strut their stuff! The students sold homemade dog treats, organized games for the children in attendance, and awarded one lucky pet the “best costume” prize. The students more than met their goal to raise $1000 in donations for KVAS. We were, and remain, most grateful.
The students were competing in the Destination Imagination competition and have chose the Service Learning Challenge as their project. Destination Imagination is a national educational program where student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments. This group of students then competed in Robbinsville, NJ and did very, very well. Congratulations & Thanks.
